Have you ever hung a piece of art over your sofa; then when you take a step back, it’s just not right? You pull it off the wall, remove the nail, and try again. It may even take a third try. You finally get it right, but now you have a bunch of holes in your wall.

Here are some tips for selecting and hanging your art to get it right the first time:

1. The piece you’re hanging should be about 2/3 the size of what it’s going over. If you’re doing a grouping, the grouping should cover the same area.

2. The center of the artwork should hang at eye level. When you step away from the piece, you should be looking straight ahead, not slightly up or down. A good guideline is 60” from the center of the piece to the floor.

3. The bottom of the artwork should be no more than 6”-8” above the top of your sofa. Any higher, and the blank wall between the art and sofa becomes a distraction.

4. Pull the picture wire up where it will hang before putting the nail in the wall. If you put the nail where the wire hangs loosely, your art will end up being way too low.

5. Make sure your artwork relates to your room, and the other pieces of art in the area. Don’t just pick pieces because they have the right colors! Make sure the themes or images tie together.
