Over the past few years, we have seen a lot of design styles and rules come and go, but what is wonderful about design trends this year is that there seem to be no set rules! We just returned from the International Home Furnishings Market in Highpoint, NC, where we saw unexpected elements mixed together to create a style that is as unique as the individual who created it. Reclaimed wood is mixed with new, shiny and bright with muted and rustic, bold and graphic with soft and feminine. This modern rustic design has become a go-to trend for anyone who enjoys a mix of styles.

Heirlooms of the Future – as an interior design style – blends older, reclaimed, or industrial features with modern architecture and contemporary features. When these two styles come together, the result is a warm, inviting home design that contains character, natural materials, clean lines, and modern conveniences. Successfully mixing rustic elements with modern touches is achieved through balance – offsetting heavier-feeling furnishings with pieces that have a sleek contemporary edge.

At Market this trend also showed up by mixing unexpected yet strong icosahedron and cube inspired geometric shapes combining rustic metal and reclaimed wood.

Here are some highlights from this trend:
