Have you had the traditional “Red and Green” tree for many years and are ready to spice things up, or do you have a second tree that needs it’s own personality? Maybe your family travels to the beach or a cabin for Christmas and you want to design around your cozy holiday getaway. Here are 5 fresh theme ideas to incorporate your surroundings or to put a unique twist on a traditional tree into your Christmas design.

Glam Theme Christmas

1. Glam

String up your high heels and party clutches with feather boas and champagne glasses. Use pink or cheetah print ribbon and silver or gold balled garland that looks like jewelry. Really brave? Use a metallic tree!

Peppermint Theme Christmas

2. Peppermint

Bright and friendly and good enough to eat! Red and white ribbon, polka dots, red balls and of course candy canes and peppermints. Wrap boxes in red and white gift wrap with red ribbon. Try this on a flocked tree for best results.

Coastal Christmas

3. Coastal

Headed to the beach for Christmas? Use a wreath as your Christmas tree and add sand dollars, seashells and paper whites with blue and kiwi green velvet ribbon.

Woodland Christmas

4. Woodland

Looking for a rustic holiday? Try some perfectly perched birds, bright red berries, icy branches and pinecones, wrapped up with pheasant feathers and plaid felt ribbon, cranberry garland, and rustic wooden sleds.

Children's Theme Christmas

5. Children’s Tree

This is a great place to display their treasured homemade ornaments. Add Duplo blocks, Matchbox cars (hanging from black and white checkered ribbon of course) and dolls. String colorful gumdrop garland and use scarves a ribbon. Large, multi-colored c9 lights give the best pop of color.

A design theme keeps you on track and it makes your holiday decor shopping less confusing. Now that you have a great idea for a new theme, what do you buy?

Designer Christmas Tree Ideas

Think over scale. The most important step that most home decorators miss: Over scaled ornaments. These don’t necessarily have to be marketed as ornaments. I have used wall hangings, table runners, signs, wreathes, and other large-scale items in a tree.Purple Christmas Ornaments

Buy in repetition. Purchase at least 5-7 of the same ornaments and several dozen of the same colored balls in varied sizes. Repetition helps define a theme and color scheme and it ensures that the tree looks consistent from all angles. This consistency will help your one-of-a-kind ornaments stand out.

Floral picks in your desired theme will help fill in those last areas. If you have a few left over, add them to a wrapped gift and place it under your tree.

Shop where the designers shop! Look up floral wholesalers and warehouses. Many of them will sell to the general public and they have the most unique items on the market.

Have a wonderfully themed holiday!
